Agam Yaacov

Yaacov Agam  (born Yaacov Gipstein on May 11, 1928) is a sculptor and experimental artist best known for his contributions to optical and kinetic art. Born in  Israel  to a religious family, Agam trained at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, before moving to Zürich and then to Paris, where he settled. His first solo exhibition was at the Galerie Graven in 1953, and in 1955 he established himself as one of the leading pioneers of kinetic art at the Le Mouvement exhibition at the Galerie Denise René, alongside such artists as Jesús Rafael Soto, Carlos Cruz-Díez, Pol Bury, Alexander Calder and Jean Tinguely.
Agam is best known for his abstract, kinetic art, engaging viewer participation as well as incorporating frequently in his creations light and sound. He was one of the leaders of the "op" and kinetic artists, whose abstract and decorative compositions can be altered by moving formal elements and/or by a gradual change in the angle of observation of the moving spectator. In 1996 Agam was awarded the Jan Amos Comenius Medal by UNESCO for the "Agam Method" for visual education of young children. Agam has exhibited in all the major modern museums and has projects all over the world. He is one of the best known Israeli artists. Sissman gallery is one of the few Israeli galleries which carries a major collection of Yaacov Agam.
